Bloged in A.T. News, Chinese by Laurence Sunday August 17, 2008

Dear all,

Thanks for your long time support to AnimalsTaiwan’s flea market. Because that to run flea market we need many volunteers and recently we are low of staff, because we need to have regular adoption event, we changed our regularly flea market to adoption event. However, many kindly AnimalsTaiwan’s lovers still mail their second-hand things to us. We greatly thank your kindness, but we not do not accept second hand things anymore. Thank you.

AnimalsTaiwan

Neutering campaign–Taiwan Lohas Animal Association

Bloged in Chinese, Dog Stories, Eye on A.T. by Laurence Friday July 25, 2008

Starting in June 2008, all registered residents of Taoyuan County can take their dogs or cats to one of 24 authorized pet hospitals (see note 1) to get a “Three-in-one treatment,” which includes neutering, microchip implantation and vaccination, at a cost of only NT 500. For more details, please visit the official website of Taiwan Lohas Animal Association: www.laa.org.tw or call: 03-2128327.

Neutering lowers the rate at which stray animals reproduce; a microchip implant increases an owner’s sense of security and responsibility; and a vaccination helps stop the spread of rabies. With this “Three-in-one treatment,” we can all work to improve the sad situation of strays in Taiwan and ultimately address the root cause of the problem. Here’s a low-cost alternative to euthanasia – a way to create a safe, peaceful, and clean environment for our beloved four-legged friends!

The “2008 Taoyuan County Neutered Dogs & Cats Expansion” has been organized by the Taoyuan County Government with the cooperation of 13 township governments, and is operated by the Taiwan Lohas Animal Association. Central and local organizations has been mobilized to raise over 4 million NT dollars (see Note 2) from the Council of Agriculture, the Taoyuan County Government, Taoyuan City, Chungli City, Luchu Township, Gueishan Township, Yangmei Township, Longtan Township, and from private businesses - for the purpose of widespread neutering of strays. We hope that in 3 to 5 years the “population explosion” among homeless dogs and cats will be a thing of the past in Taoyuan County.

Life is a treasure and every animal on this planet has a right to existence. No creature deserves to be destroyed - but unfortunately that is just what happens to many poor dogs and cats - animals that have come into our world without homes to live in. They are the offspring of the millions of strays who roam the streets. To solve the stray animal problem, we believe in a three-pronged approach: “Law; Education; Neutering” – with neutering as the cornerstone for the other two. Despite all efforts that government and local groups have made, countless domestic animals are abandoned every day. As these homeless creatures reproduce, the stray population rises exponentially. And thousands of them end up being “put to sleep” at public shelters.

Take the community of Hsinwu for example: In the past four years, its stray population has increased dramatically, and euthanasia is practiced there almost everyday. In 2007, the total number of animals put down was nearly 9000, third highest in Taiwan! From the standpoint of basic humanity, cost effectiveness, environmental protection and public safety, this is a terrible and heart-breaking situation! It is clear: euthanasia is NOT the way to solve the stray animal problem. We need to rethink the situation and “Neuter rather than kill” and “Adopt rather than buy.” These should be the objectives of government, local groups and all individuals who love animals.

We hope to spread this “Neuter rather than kill” concept to every corner. The Taoyuan County Animal Protection and Health Inspection Center and the Taiwan Lohas Animal Association have produced a short film: “Have you heard?” which promotes the importance of neutering and which also contains some shocking facts and images from the Hsinwu shelter. We’d like to send this film to every educational facility in the county. Schools which are interested should contact the Taiwan Lohas Animal Association to arrange a showing. And, if you’d like to sponsor the neutering, please contact them as well.

A final thought worth remembering is this: a press conference held on June 5th 2008 described a typical dog’s breeding ability. One female can generate 65 dogs in a single year and 3136 in two! That’s the children and grandchildren from ONE dog! And there are hundreds of thousands without homes in Taiwan at this moment.

Note 1: For the list of 24 authorized hospitals, please see the DM.
Note 2: The funds for this activity come from: Council of Agriculture - $500000; Taoyuan County Government - $600000; Gamania Digital Entertainment Co. - $700000; Luchu Township - $600000; Chungli City - $500000; Gueishan Township - $500000; Taoyuan City - $300000; Yangmei Township - $200000; Longtan Township - $90000; Private business - $300000; Total donations - $4290000. All the above funds are to be used in the neutering project. Expense for brochures, red banners etc. have been provided by Gamania Digital Entertainment Co.

Frankie

Bloged in Submitted by Sean Tuesday July 15, 2008

Frankie was spotted as a thin-looking stray in the HsinHai/ShiDa area, but it wasn’t until a few days later that a large wound became visible on his head. A call was made to Animals Taiwan, and rescue-centre manager Brandy responded as she was in the area.

Not having any equipment in her car, Brandy couldn’t catch Frankie with a pole, net, or trap, and instead had to work on winning the nervous young dog’s trust - something that Brandy is particularly gifted at, and which was aided by the fact that Frankie was hungry and Brandy had a tin of dog food with which to entice him.

Frankie soon came to get the food, albeit cautiously, and Brandy was able to stroke him gently and eventually get a hold of his collar. But Frankie was still very tense, and, when Brandy tried to lift him into her car, the scared little guy pulled out of her grip and ran to the security of the lane where he had been living.

Luckily for Brandy, Animals Taiwan supporter Alex and her husband David were in the area, and David helped Brandy look for Frankie, who clearly needed urgent medical attention. A pet-store owner who had seen Frankie around also joined in the hunt while Brandy went back to the rescue centre to pick up a net and crate.

But it wasn’t needed. Frankie was found hanging out in his usual spot, and again succumbed to his overwhelming desire to eat; Brandy was able to coax him to within reach even more easily than last time. She picked him up, got a much better grip on him, gently put Frankie in her car, and drove him straight to the Animals Taiwan vet, Dr Yang at YangMing Veterinary Clinic in Tienmu.

Dr Yang and Brandy were both quite shocked to discover that Frankie’s injury was much worse than anyone had thought. Somehow, the blow to his head was so hard that it had actually split open his skull. He was also missing half his tail, had a neck injury that showed he had been chained up for some time, and what appeared to be burnt skin. It seems Frankie had been the victim of some extremely cruel abuse. Thankfully there are good people out there, and he was lucky that so many of them had worked so hard to get him the medical help he so urgently needed.

Frankie is recovering well from his injuries. He loves people and is a very outgoing young dog despite the abuse he endured. He’s putting on good, healthy weight, and his fur is growing back. And he is loved. Alex and David made a generous donation to sponsor his care, and the staff and volunteers at Animals Taiwan are working hard to get Frankie adopted into the kind of home he deserves so that he never has to suffer such abuse again.

If you would like to give Frankie a home, please contact Brandy today, at brandy@animalstaiwan.org or Tuesday to Saturday on 0966 876 829 (at reasonable times only, please); you can also call the Animals Taiwan rescue centre on 02 2833 8820.
