AT quote of the day
The worst sin towards our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them, that is the essence of inhumanity.

About Animals Taiwan

Who we are...

AnimalsTaiwan is a group of people, both expatriate and local, concerned about the welfare of animals in Taiwan, in particular that of the stray population. We work to raise awareness of the stray problem and education people about the responsibilities of pet ownership.

Please read this informative profile written as a special feature for the China Post newspaper in Taipei.

Every Dog Has its Day - by Trista di Genova

We rescue sick, injured, and young strays, rehabilitate them, vaccinate them, desex them, and try to find them permanent, caring homes. To date we have helped over one hundred animals, many of which were given little chance of survival upon initial veternary assessment.

AnimalsTaiwan believes in giving every animal the chance of a life without suffering, however small that chance may be.

Realising that we can only help a limited number of animals through individual rehabilitation, Animals Taiwan's goal for the future is to set up CNR (Catch-Neuter-Return) projects around the island.

CNR involves catching the strays, treating them, vaccinating them, desexing them, and returning them to the location they were found. This is the only method of stray-population control that works; it is also the most humane. We cannot do any of this without support from people who care about the plight of the other animals that share this island we now call home.

What we need...

In simple terms what we really need is donations. Whether big or small, they are all gratefully received and put to good use straight away, paying for vaccinations, life-saving operations, neutering operations, food, and the medical supplies for those in our care. We also need volunteers to give their time to help bake and sell our delicious dog biscuits, foster a needy dog or cat, translate, help with administration, organise events, develop media links, dog-walk or fence-build. It all makes a difference. To find out more about our volunteering opportunities please contact us by phone or email.

Our methods...

Our overall aim of increasing donations and income to help meet our organisational goals has succeeded through a number of recent initiatives and actions:

  • Increasing our visibility by putting on public events. This has included staging weekly adoption events at major Taipei shopping malls and public fairs such as the Taipei American School Spring Fair.
  • Increasing our stock of merchandising to include pet products, clothing, caps, mugs and other small items.
  • Wide distribution of flyers and stickers.
  • Current update of our website www.animalstaiwan.org
  • Re-organisation of our volunteers (currently around 200 ex-pats and locals and growing every day) into dedicated teams to cover Merchandising, Events, Publicity, Animal Education and Awareness, Adoption and Fostering and Fund Raising
  • Press coverage of our events in the local and English speaking newspapers
  • Expansion from Taipei to start-up AT organisations in other major cities such as Taichung and Hualien
  • Increased public awareness through local television, radio and other media.
